Redundancy

Department of Redundancy Department

First the sign to the right of the door replaced a paper sign letting people in my office building know where to find the stairs. Apparently this wasn’t enough, because a new sign appeared ON the door.

This is bothersome squared for me. Not only is it completely redundant, but there’s a different word on each sign! In different fonts, no less. I am a firm believer in effective communication, but you’ve also got to believe that your reader has some independent brain power.

Actually I have solved the problem. According to dictionary.com:
Stairwell-the vertical shaft containing a staircase
Staircase-a flight of stairs including banisters ect

So obviously someone saw the initial sign, knew that it only covered part of the “items” that needed signage, and then proceeded to fully signagize the entire area. I suspect that the next signs will be “steps” and “tread”. Who knows where this could lead. If it were a government building we would obviously have a task force, a task force manager, and a line item in the budget devoted to it.
